Michelle O was born in Chicago, Illinois to Frasier and Marian Robinson. She was raised on the South Side of Chicago in a one-bedroom apartment where Michelle and her brother Craig shared the living room "bedroom". Their bedroom spaces were separated by a room divider, actually a makeshift sheet.

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was raised with an emphasis on the importance of education. Her mother Marian, formerly a Spiegel secretary, stayed home to raise the two children. Maybe they went trick or treating in costumes at Halloween.
Michelle and her brother both learned to read at the age of four, and both were able to skip the second grade.
By middle school, Michelle Robinson attended gifted classes and took accelerated courses. Wanting to attend the best schools available, Michelle and Craig went to Chicago’s first magnet high school for gifted students. Michelle graduated second in her high school class. Next stop was Princeton University to earn a BA in Sociology. Michelle next earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
Michelle and Barack Obama met when they worked at the same law firm in Chicago. Michelle had seniority and was assigned as Barack’s adviser. The couple dated for two years and Barack proposed in a restaurant.
Michelle’s career followed with stints with the City of Chicago, for a non-profit leadership training program, and with the University of Chicago.
